We move into 2020 with a renewed focus on our mission to end breast cancer. We will soon launch a new website, logo and campaign, and a White Paper about our 2020 Deadline Campaign. Thank you for all of your advocacy and support through 2019 and the past many years.
NBCC LEAD trained advocates engage in various research projects and analyses throughout the year. In 2019, Judy Perkins, Andrea Hutton, Michele Atlan and Tracy Edler Leduc, with support from NBCC staff, completed a many months-long project, assessing the amount of federal funding directed toward Metastatic Breast Cancer (MBC) research in fiscal year 2016 via two of the largest sources of breast cancer research funding:
The NIH Breast Cancer Research Portfolio (1693 projects)
The DoD Congressionally Directed Medical Research Program – Breast Cancer Research Program (CDMRP BCRP) (87 projects)
The advocates found that the CDMRP BCRP had a significantly higher percentage of projects (57.6%) that were considered to be MBC research than the NIH Breast Cancer Research Portfolio (14.7%).
The aggregate federal funding (NIH and DoD/BCRP) for breast cancer research in FY 2016 was $748,183,835. The aggregate amount of MBC research funding was $149,183,882. Thus, the percentage of NIH and DoD/BCRP MBC research in FY 2016 across both federal programs was estimated to be approximately 20%, heavily weighted by the DOD BCRP funding.
The MBC Research Funding Analysis was presented as a poster at the 2019 San Antonio Breast Cancer Symposium (SABCS) and was well received by Symposium participants. Apply today for NBCC’s premier science training program, the Project LEAD Institute. This intensive six-day course is designed to give advocates a strong foundation in the science of breast cancer, allowing them to sit at all tables where decisions about breast cancer are made. Participants will receive rigorous training in areas such as cancer biology, genetics, epidemiology, and clinical trial design, from a group of highly experienced faculty. Graduates of Project LEAD will join the ranks of breast cancer advocates widely acknowledged to be among the most effective in the field.
The 2020 Project LEAD Institute will be held on July 26-31 in La Jolla, CA. We will once again be using a rolling admissions process, with applicants being accepted monthly beginning in January. The final deadline to apply is April 20, 2020. The application process is competitive, so be sure to apply early.
