National Breast Cancer Coalition

Call To Action Online August 2019

Public Policy: Take Action!
Thanks to the great work of NBCC’s grassroots advocates we continue to build on the momentum for the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act, H.R. 2178/S. 1374. This legislation, spearheaded by NBCC, was introduced in the House as H.R. 2178 on April 9 by Representatives Peter King (R-NY) and Kathy Castor (D-FL) and currently has 107 cosponsors. On May 8, Senators Martha McSally (R-AZ) and Chris Murphy (D-CT) introduced S. 1374 in the Senate, which currently has 10 cosponsors.

The 116th Congress is adjourned for August recess through September 9. During this time Representatives and Senators will be in their home districts. This is our opportunity to act and contact them when they are not on the Hill and ask them to support NBCC’s priorities. Have your Members cosponsored the bill? Find out more about what you can do during the recess to help build on bipartisan support of both bills here.

As always, thank you for your advocacy on behalf of NBCC and our mission to end breast cancer!

LEADcast Recap
On Wednesday, August 7, 2019, Dr. Karen Cichowski of Harvard Medical School, Brigham and Women’s Hospital, and the Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center, led an exclusive LEADcast webinar entitled “Dissecting the Tumor Specificity of Cancer Drivers.” The presentation focused on her work on the SpecifiCancer project and her lab’s efforts to understand why certain cancers grow in some tissues and not in others. The presentation was followed by a lively Q&A session with Project LEAD graduates and a conversation about how this research might one day be of use in a clinical setting. LEAD graduates interested in viewing a copy of this recording can reach out to Skye Wilson, Programs Manager at

Many thanks to Dr. Cichowski for taking the time to speak with our advocates! If you are interested in learning more about the SpecifiCancer project, visit their website:

Advanced LEAD
Congratulations to the 2019 class of Advanced Project LEAD! Three NBCC advocates and Project LEAD graduates—Christine Carpenter, Gowri Betrabet Gulwadi, and Joy Simha—developed research protocols for self-identified research questions related to breast cancer. On July 29th, each presented their research proposals to NBCC, as well as to Dr. Alana Welm (University of Utah School of Medicine) and Dr. Cyrus Ghajar (Fred Hutchinson Cancer Research Center) for feedback and discussion.

Thank you, Christine, Gowri, and Joy for your continued hard work and dedication to NBCC and to our shared goal of ending breast cancer!
