2016 Summit

There is Nothing like a NBCC Leadership summit.

The 2016 Leadership Summit was an intensive three days of programs and workshops, capped by a full day of advocate meetings on Capitol Hill to further NBCC’s legislative agenda.

Commemorating 25 years of NBCC, speakers at a special luncheon looked back to the founding of the organization. Twenty-five years of advocacy was recognized and attendees heard about some key moments in the organization’s journey from advocates who helped make those moments happen.

The change of venue to the Renaissance Arlington Capital View Hotel was well received.  The attendees participated in a variety of workshops and forums which served to energize them and gave everyone new ideas to take back home.

Highlights of this year’s Summit include:

  • “After 25 Years, What Do We Really Know About Preventing Metastasis?”
  • “Complexities of Metastatic Breast Cancer Research”
  • “After 25 Years, What Do We Really Know About Preventing Breast Cancer?”
  • “Breast Cancer is Political: Mobilizing in the 2016 Political Environment”
  • Videos of many of the 2016 Summit sessions can be found here.

Because this is a Presidential Election year, the Summit included a “Convention” so advocates could engage, strategize, and vote on what the next President of the United States needs to do to meet Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®.

    Legislative Updates

Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act

H.R. 1197, Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act currently has 272 cosponsors (168-D, 104-R).  In the House 34 cosponsors serve on the Energy & Commerce committee - which has sole jurisdiction over the bill.  Key meetings have been held with House Leadership including the offices of Speaker Paul Ryan and Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi, as well as committee leadership including Chairman Fred Upton (R-MI) and Ranking Member Frank Pallone (D-NJ).  The ground swell of support for the legislation makes this bill a prime candidate to be reported out of committee and brought to the House floor for a vote, and eventual passage.

    S. 746 currently has 51 cosponsors (14-R; 35-D; 2-I). 13 members are on the Health Education and Pensions Committee (HELP) which has sole jurisdiction over the legislation.  Several Senate offices have indicated that they are leaning toward co-sponsorship. With a few more offices signed on, the Senate co-leads will be able to push for a “hotline vote.”  This maneuver would allow for a quick vote, and eventual passage on the bill.

Both the House and Senate versions of the Accelerating the End of Breast Cancer Act are at a critical time for action, passage and enactment into law.  For a complete current listing of all sponsors and co-sponsors, click here

Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program (DOD BCRP)

Senator John McCain introduced The National Defense Authorization Act which included language to end the DOD BCRP.  NBCC immediately sprang into action, and together with their advocates, organized 71 groups to co-sign this letter to both the Chairman and Ranking Member of the Senate Committee on Armed Services opposing the problematic language.

On June 6th, the Senate, by a vote of 66-32, passed to repeal the harmful language which would have destroyed the DOD BCRP and all the Congressionally Directed Medical Research Programs.  In addition, 41 Senators signed on as co-sponsors of the Amendment.

Thank You to Our Incredible Advocates

We are always amazed by the quick action of so many of our advocates, in the face of competing priorities and busy lives.  This hard work and commitment to Breast Cancer Deadline 2020® is demonstrated repeatedly, most recently at NBCC's 2016 Lobby Day and then with the rapid response to sign on to the letter opposing the destruction of the DOD BCRP.  We know we could not wage this important battle without our advocates’ involvement and hard work.  So, thank you for all that you do.
