Contact: Sue Ducat (202) 973-0588 Washington, DC, November 7, 2007 - Americans will go to the polls one year from today to select the next president. The National Breast Cancer Coalition reports that some voters have already selected which candidate has the best plan to eradicate breast cancer. On October 1, NBCC launched a special election website, the Breast Cancer Caucus (www.BreastCancerCaucus.org.) It includes videos from candidates stating what they would do to end breast cancer if elected as well as written positions on NBCC's policy priorities -- guaranteed access to quality health care; support for continuing the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program; support for the Breast Cancer Environmental Research Act (S.579, H.R. 1157); and preservation of the Medicaid Breast Cancer and Cervical Cancer Treatment Program. During the month of October -- Breast Cancer Awareness Month - thousands of visitors to the Breast Cancer Caucus carefully viewed the plans and positions of the candidates - and voted. Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton's plan was preferred by a plurality of website visitors compared to those of the other candidates. Candidates who have submitted videos, which are also posted on YouTube: Democrats Biden, Clinton, Edwards, Gravel, and Kucinich; and Republican Brownback. In addition, Republicans Brownback, Giuliani, Huckabee and Thompson and Democrats Biden, Clinton, Dodd, Edwards, Obama and Richardson submitted written responses. "Breast cancer is a political issue, and NBCC is proud to have pushed this issue to the forefront of the national political agenda," said the organization's president, Fran Visco. "Voters everywhere in this country should continue to visit the Breast Cancer Caucus, which will be the place to get the most up to date information on where the presidential candidates stand on breast cancer. We are confident that ending breast cancer will be an important priority for the next president, and for voters who one year from now will be making their choice." Additions to the Breast Cancer Caucus in 2008 will include a breast cancer public policy platform, information about voter registration and pledge drives, and questions for voters to ask the candidates at town hall meetings, debates and other forums. The National Breast Cancer Coalition is a grassroots membership organization dedicated to ending breast cancer through the power of action and advocacy. Along with its research and education arm the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund, the Coalition's main goals are to increase federal funding for breast cancer research; improve access to high-quality health care and breast cancer clinical trials for all women; and expand the influence of breast cancer advocates wherever breast cancer decisions are made. |
