Rep. Jamie Raskin and Panel: Democracy is Fundamental to NBCC Priorities

Many years ago, at an NBCC conference, breast cancer survivors from other countries expressed amazement at our ability to walk into congressional offices and meet with the U.S. Congress to advance our agenda to end breast cancer. This year at NBCC’s Annual Advocate Leadership Summit, an important discussion happened on how to protect that fundamental democratic right. Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) spoke to advocates about the urgent need to protect the U.S. democracy as it is foundational to all other policy issues. Following Rep. Raskin’s remarks, a panel of social justice advocates spoke about how protecting the right to vote is critical to maintaining NBCC’s ability to pursue its agenda to end breast cancer. They focused on the fact that it is vital that all citizens are responsible for protecting and maintaining democratic norms and gave examples of how to find advocacy opportunities in every local community. Stay Tuned for NBCC’s Vote Breast Cancer Campaign.

NBCC Advocates Back on Capitol Hill!

On May 3, more than 130 NBCC advocates made their voices heard on Capitol Hill. In-person, in offices and cafeterias, and virtually through zoom, advocates met the moment and held more than 140 meetings. After three days of summit sessions that included discussion of NBCC priorities, strategy and tactics, advocates then educated congressional staff on the need for funding for the DOD Breast Cancer Research Program and asked members to support H.R. 3183/S. 1312 the Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act. NBCC advocates were excited to be face to face with their peers and back in person on Capitol Hill for the first time in two years. In-person advocacy matters and we look forward to continuing NBCC’s unique brand of advocacy.
