The Senate Committee on Appropriations approved $47.2 billion in 2026 funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH), a 1% increase. The Trump administration’s budget proposal would have cut NIH funding by $18 billion, or about 40%.
Victory? Not by a long shot.
This administration has shown no qualms about terminating already approved and funded grants. Appropriating NIH funds isn’t enough—what will Congress do to protect science? Will they have the courage to do so?
