NBCC to Begin Next Phase in Its Mission to End Breast Cancer

April 5, 2024

Since 1991, the National Breast Cancer Coalition (NBCC) has worked to change the conversation, the status quo, and the lives of those affected by breast cancer by combining the power of advocacy, education, policy, and research around one mission: ending breast cancer.

Our work embraces comprehensive, unprecedented, far-reaching programs and advocacy, including research that relies on diverse collaborations with visionary scientists and educated advocates. For the past several years, NBCC leadership has been laying the foundation of a plan to ensure our impactful evolution well into the future until we achieve our mission. Our plan to launch a search for successor leadership in July of this year will move forward especially given recent developments with NBCC President Fran Visco’s health.

“For over 30 years, NBCC has been my life’s work and passion, always working towards our mission to end breast cancer. I’m proud of our accomplishments and all we have done together and all we will do going forward,” said Visco. “The strength of our grassroots, our advocacy, and our programs are like no other breast cancer organization. My diagnosis of metastatic breast cancer only furthers our commitment to end this disease for all. I remain committed to leading NBCC into this next phase of our work.”

Visco and other NBCC leadership are engaging a specialized executive search firm to identify qualified candidates ready to take on the future of our work. The process is being overseen by a committee that includes Visco; Alec Call, Chair of the National Breast Cancer Coalition Fund (NBCCF) Board; Judi Hirshfield-Bartek representing the NBCC Board of Directors; Ira Hillman, NBCCF Treasurer and Board Member; and Mara Walker, NBCC Chief Operating Officer, Chief of Staff.

Throughout this process, Visco, the Board of Directors, Board of Trustees, and NBCC staff will continue our important work as we always have. Join us as we advance our Advocate Leadership Summit, Project LEAD, Artemis Project, advocacy for the Department of Defense Breast Cancer Research Program and Metastatic Breast Cancer Access to Care Act, and other essential programming.

Updates will be posted at stopbreastcancer.org/transition as they become available.
